How to Stay Cosy Without Switching on the Heating

How to Stay Cosy Without Switching on the Heating

As the evenings turn cooler here on the Cornish coast, we find ourselves reaching for simple comforts to stay warm without flicking on the heating. Living by the sea, the air carries a little more bite this time of year - but it also reminds us to embrace the season, slow down, and make the most of cosy evenings indoors.

Here are a few ways we keep snug at home when the temperatures dip -

1. Layers, Always

Just as we’d layer up before a blustery beach walk, we do the same indoors. Wool blankets draped over the sofa or the end of the bed add warmth you can pull around your shoulders the moment there’s a chill. We always keep one near our favourite chair, ready for a quiet moment with a book or cuppa.

2. Create Little Warm Havens

Instead of heating the whole house, we focus on the corners where we spend the most time - the sofa for family film nights, or the kitchen table for long suppers. A blanket at hand makes these spots feel instantly inviting, and somehow the rest of the house doesn’t feel so cold.

3. Let the Light In

Here in Cornwall, the autumn sun sits low and golden. We open the curtains wide in the day to catch as much as we can, then switch to lamps and candles as the light fades. There’s something about the glow of a candle that feels just as warming as a radiator.

4. Move, Then Rest

A walk along the coast path, even on a blustery day, always leaves us feeling warmer. And it makes that moment of coming home, kicking off boots, and curling under a blanket all the sweeter.

5. Choose Natural Fibres

Wool is our go-to because it’s nature’s best insulator - breathable, durable, and so much warmer than synthetics. Recycled cotton is another favourite, lighter but super soft and perfect for layering. Both make the kind of companions you can rely on year after year.

Finding Warmth in Small Rituals

For us, staying warm without switching on the heating isn’t just about saving energy - it’s about creating little rituals of comfort. A blanket around your shoulders, a candle on the table, the sound of the sea outside - small things that make home feel truly cosy.
